Reasons to Buy Traditional/Reproduction Furniture
If like many at this time of the year you are thinking about purchasing a new piece of furniture or may be still looking for that piece you have always longed for then as some one who is biased towards traditional influences I can offer you several reasons why buying a traditional or reproduction piece of furniture has several advantages over its modern or contemporary equivalent in today's market place.
Before explaining my reasons to buy repro I should add that my initial advise for some one purchasing any piece of furniture is always purchase the highest quality of piece you can afford and where possible always buy British.
Quality furniture in will always stand the test of time and in today's world where free trade is now the norm it means the UK like many countries is being flooded with foreign imports from all over the world many of which although very competitive in price are of very poor quality, buying British will not only give you a better chance of picking up a good quality product but it will also insure that you and your retailer will have easy access to the manufacturer of the product should any problems arise over your purchase.
On to the question why buy traditional or reproduction furniture instead of modern styles :
Most buyers of traditional furniture will already have traditional style decoration in place, for those that haven't you might be interested to know that a traditional piece of furniture in many cases will sit nicely in modern surroundings especially furniture constructed from light timbers such as cherry , yew, satin wood, maple, oak and ash but to name a few. Some modern interiors that look minimalistic can be made to feel softer and more homely with the introduction of the odd piece of furniture made with a traditional influence about it.
For those with traditional decoration already in place, the warmth and ambiance that in my view can only be obtained from high quality traditional or antique furniture of the period will need no persuading which is the better buy. Traditional furniture will add history and in some cases that much sought after family influence to your decor, it also will soften any room interior.
A further reason to by good quality reproduction or traditional furniture is an obvious one, if made in the style of a particular century that piece will not date it starts its life in the style the period and will therefore not be affected by passing modern trends as would a new modern or contemporary piece, and as long as the quality is good it will retain some of its value over many years of use, If the quality is high and the design is good it may also become an antique of the future as did many of the pieces made in centuries past.
It can quite rightly be argued that a high quality modern piece of furniture purchased today will also enjoy the same outcome as its reproduction counterpart and I would have no argument with this line of thought, although I would say that such instances will be rare, at least for most of the imported contemporary furniture coming into the country today which is mediocre at best and in a relatively short period of time will be considered old and out of fashion.
A further advantage in purchasing British made traditional furniture is the undoubted quality that we here in the UK posses in making furniture, in my opinion albeit biased we in the UK are still the best in the business at making quality furniture. Unlike many modern pieces that are today manufactured using modern technology good traditional style furniture will incorporate many of the tried and tested traditional cabinet making methods that when incorporated with modern technology offer the best of both worlds, the hand cut dovetail drawer is not a thing of the past, yet, we still make our drawers in this fashion and still use many of the time honoured methods of construction in the make up of all our furniture.
Buy British and buy Traditional.
